The national association of PR practitioners was established in 1958 to promote the recognition of PR company as a profession and to interpret to the public the objectives of public relations as a strategic management function. The society is registered under the Indian Societies Act XXVI of 1961, with headquarters in Mumbai. The membership of the society is open to any person and also to any firm, body corporate or association of persons. Such membership take effect on admission and classification at the discretion of the National Council. The following classes of members are Members; Life Members; Associate Members, Honorary Members and Student Members. April 21, is a red-letter day in the history of Indian PR. It is because the National Public Relations Day is celebrated on this day all over the country since 1986. The objective behind designating April 21 as National PR Day is to focus attention on PR function and professionals in India who have an increasingly important role in the development of the country. PR Company began to increase in India in the early 1990s when the government opened the economy and multinational corporations began to enter the country. The First All India Public Relations Conference was organised in Delhi on April 21, 1968. PSRI had 26 All India PR conferences including the 9th PR World Congress in Bombay in 1982 and the first Asia Pacific PR Meet in Kolkata during January, 1998 and International Public Relations Conference at Bangalore in 2002. After the independence it was realised that PR is necessary in order to communicate for development and to create a bridge between the public and the government and more organisations appreciated the role of professional pr in years ahead.
